Background and research question: The issue of successful integration has taken on greater importance since more refugees have come to Germany. In the frame of the research project “Flight and Integration. Refugees in Saxony” (FLIN) a pre-test has been conducted among refugees in Saxony, aiming to provide a foundation for a planned Germany-wide survey. The purpose of the study is to raise the information level about refugees, their socio-demographic background, political attitudes, values and views on Germany.
Method: Between November 2016 and January 2017, 61 refugees mostly from initial reception centres in Chemnitz, Dresden, and Leipzig have been surveyed. The study has been conducted using a standardized questionnaire in Arabic, Persian, English, and German language. In case of questions and difficulties with the questionnaire, the interviewees could ask trained interviewers with skills in Arabic and Persian. A part of the participants has received an incentive of 10 Euros.
Results: More than two thirds of the interviewees (69,2 %) feel very or rather welcome in Germany. More than one third (37,5 %) of all respondents report experiences of discrimination. The persons questioned are highly in favour of democracy, although there is also some support for authoritarian systems. Just a small minority (6,3 %) of respondents call themselves “very religi-ous”. The interviewed refugees agree to a large extent that women and men should have equal rights.
Discussion: As the pre-test is not representative, the results should be cautiously interpreted. However, other refugee surveys achieve mostly similar results. The pre-test shows that access to the interviewees has to be improved in the following study: The respondents should be better informed in advance about the study, and appropriate venues are needed to conduct the survey. When participants are selected, a sufficient level of speaking and reading comprehension skills should be considered. The measurement of political attitudes and values has been problematic due to the high number of missing values and should be adapted in the following study. Furthermore, some problems of translation into the Arabic and Persian versions of the questionnaire have to be solved.
